Maren Morris’s song “Kiss The Sky,” written for the movie “The Wild Robot,” has become more than just a track I enjoy—it’s my personal anthem. From the first moment I heard it, I felt an undeniable connection, as if the lyrics were pulled directly from the pages of my own story. It wasn’t just a song—it was a mirror, reflecting both where I’ve been and where I’m going.

Whenever the shuffle gods decide to bless me with this track, I can’t help but passionately belt it out—not gracefully, but with all my heart. The melody, the energy, and the words feel like fuel for my soul. Each lyric transports me through the seasons of my life—starting with my curious, wide-eyed younger self, then transitioning into teenage Toni, and finally arriving at the woman I am today. This woman is bold. She looks fear squarely in the eye and steps forward anyway. And when she does, it feels an awful lot like flying.

The Power in the Lyrics

The song’s lyrics speak to the core of who I am now and who I am still becoming:

“What if you look your fears right in the eye
Say you’ll see them another time?
What if, for once
You can find the piece of you that you’ve been hidin’, you’ve been hidin’?
What if you chase your heart out to the edge
Rewrite your stars and be brave instead?
What if you jump
And the fallin’ feels a little like you’re flyin’…?”

The words remind me that courage doesn’t mean never being afraid—it means acting in spite of fear. They challenge me to stop hiding the most authentic parts of myself and to stop letting caution rule my decisions. Life, after all, will pass us by if we spend too much of it tiptoeing instead of leaping.

From Little Toni to Fearless Toni

Little Toni was a dreamer, spinning stories in her mind and imagining a future as a famous author. But somewhere along the way, teenage Toni locked those words away, too scared to let anyone see them. Young adult Toni believed the lies that whispered, you’re not good enough, and clung so tightly to perfectionism that she suffocated her own passion.

Today’s Toni is different. She refuses to shrink herself to fit into someone else’s expectations. She’s learning to speak boldly, to write unapologetically, and to share her story with the hope that it might make someone else feel seen, validated, and less alone. She writes so her children can see firsthand what it means to chase something that sets your soul on fire—without fear of failure, without the weight of “what will people think?” She wants them to understand that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the decision to leap anyway.

A Song for Me and for Them

I don’t just sing “Kiss The Sky” for myself—I sing it for my children. When they join in, their voices echoing mine, my heart swells with pride. In those moments, I’m not just their mother; I’m their example of what it means to keep dreaming, to keep leaping, and to live with courage. I hope they carry that anthem in their hearts long after the music fades.

Choosing to Fly

Life offers countless chances to either hold back or leap forward. For too many years, I let fear and self-doubt anchor me in place. But this song—this reminder to look fear in the eye and jump—has become a rallying cry for my soul. It’s a promise to myself and to my children that we will chase the things that light us up, no matter the risks. Because when you dare to leap, you might just find that the falling feels like flying—and if you’re lucky, you just might kiss the sky.
