As first responder spouses, it’s easy to pour so much of ourselves into supporting our partners, our families, and our communities that we forget to pause and remember who we are outside of that role. Our identity is not defined solely by the title we carry or the sacrifices we make. We are more than the spouse, the support system, the “strong one.” We are whole, multifaceted, and deserving of attention, care, and growth.
This year, I am choosing my Word of the Year: CLAIM.
To me, CLAIM is about stepping fully into the life I am meant to live- without hesitation, without apology, and without asking for permission. It’s about recognizing my worth and refusing to shrink or hide. It’s about claiming my voice, my creativity, and my space both personally and professionally.
CLAIM is also about the balance of giving and receiving. I can show up fully for others while also honoring my own needs. I can create safe spaces for my family, my friends, and my tribe, while trusting that my presence, my voice, and my worth are equally important.
This year is an invitation:
- To claim my creativity and honor the stories I write, the content I create, and the impact I make.
- To claim my career by moving with intention, speaking clearly, and stepping into opportunities that reflect my value.
- To claim my relationships by showing up authentically, even when it’s hard, and creating spaces where others feel safe, heard, and valued.
- To claim my warrior within by standing firmly in my truth and moving forward even when fear or doubt appears.
CLAIM is a word that reminds me I have always had everything I need to stand tall. This year, I choose to take up space, show up fully, and trust that what I bring to the world is needed, valuable, and worthy.
As first responder spouses, we do so much for those around us. This year, let’s also claim ourselves, fully and unapologetically.

- What word captures how you want to show up this year?
Think beyond goals—what feeling, energy, or action do you want to embody daily? - Where do you want to step into your worth?
Is it in your career, creativity, relationships, self-care, or personal growth? - What habits or boundaries do you need to claim for yourself?
What will allow you to protect your energy while still being present for others? - How can this word guide your decisions and actions this year?
